Malay Rulers Have Obligation, Responsibility To Uplift Status Of Islam

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 (Bernama) — The Malay Rulers have an obligation and a responsibility to uplift the status of Islam using their powers as the heads of the Islamic religion in their respective states.

ShamrahayuInternational Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) law lecturer, Assoc Prof Dr Shamrahayu Abdul Aziz said the concept of Constitutional Monarchy should not prevent the Malay Rulers from discharging their responsibilities as heads of the Islamic religion.

“The royal institution is the main driving force in the implementation of Islamic law and to uplift the status of Islam as national religion.

logo-seminar SEMAIAN+JAKIM“With the long-existing recognition, it is high time for the Rulers to play their parts more significantly as heads of Islamic religion,” she said when tabling her working paper titled ‘Sovereignty of Islam as National Religion : Roles of Malay Rulers as Stipulated in Federal Constitution’ at the Seminar to Uplift Status of Islam as National religion (SEMAIAN) here Saturday.

She also said the Malay Rulers could also play their parts in formulating government policies so that the policies would be in line with the status of Islam as the official religion in the country.
